Mugisha Muntu — formally Major General (retired) Mugisha Muntu — is a Ugandan politician and former military officer. He is the founder and president of the political party Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), under whose flag he has been nominated as a presidential candidate for Uganda’s 2026 general election.

He was born in October 1958 in Kitunga Village, Ntungamo District, in what is now the Ankole sub‑region. Muntu attended Mbarara Junior School, Kitunga Primary School, and Kitunga High School, before proceeding to Makerere College School, and eventually graduating from Makerere University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.

Immediately after finishing his university education, Muntu joined the guerrilla movement National Resistance Army (NRA) under the leadership of Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, rising through the ranks to serve as head of Military Intelligence and later as Commander of the national army (1989–1998) following the NRA’s transformation into the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).

In his political career, Muntu served as a member of the Constituent Assembly (1994–1995) and has represented Uganda in the regional legislative body East African Legislative Assembly (EALA). Having led the then‑opposition party Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) from 2012 to 2017, he left to establish ANT in 2019 on grounds of ideological divergence.
